Economists Dine Out

Future Iolani Economists Attend Milton Friedman Birthday Luncheon

Nobel Prize-winning Economist Milton Friedman, a free market and school choice advocate, would have been 96 years old today. In honor of Professor Friedman, the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii and the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation hosted a luncheon at the Pacific Club.

The guest speaker was Professor Gail Heriot, a member of the United States Commission on Civil rights and a Professor of law at the University of San Diego.

In addition to honoring Professor Friedman, Professor Heriot also told the audience that freedom and equality were not mutually exclusive goals. However, in those societies where equality has been the main focus of laws and policies, equality has suffered. She used the former Soviet Union as one of the examples. On the other hand, she posed that were freedom has been the main focus, equality has a better record as in the United States up until now.

Many of Hawaii's former and current politicians were in attendance, as were Iolani seniors Rayfe Gaspar-Asaoka and Robert Tamai. Rayfe and Robert are both signed up to take Advanced Placement Economics this fall. They both have also expressed interest in participating in the Economics Challenge Competition next year for Iolani School.
