OUTSIDE OBSERVATION ASSIGNMENT
You must complete one live observation per semester. You must do one each of the following:
1) Performance (e.g., play or musical): Perhaps the easiest and most fun performance to watch is a school production. The Iolani Dramatic Players perform a Fall Play and Spring Musical for a low price and you can watch Iolani students on stage.
2) Speech or debate festival or tournament. You will be given a schedule of this year's speech and debate meets as soon as it is available. We will ask you to sign up early in the year for the meet you plan to attend. These events occur at high schools around the island. Choose one with a location and day that are convenient for you.
Upon completing your observation, you will write a 1½ -2 page typed, double-spaced paper. Use manuscript form, observe 1 inch margins, and use 12-point Times New Roman font. Please address the following in your paper:
A. The event that you observed: What did you see, when did you see it, where did you see it? Be descriptive and provide lots of specific details. In other words, assume that the reader did NOT see the event. Make it come alive for the reader!
B. Your thoughts and feelings about the event: What did you think about the event? How did you feel about the event? Were you pleasantly surprised with the performance? Were you disappointed? Why? Again, be specific.
C. How did the event reinforce what you are learning or have learned about oral communication and performances? What English 9 skills were the performers employing? What new skills did the performers practice? What did you learn about performing after watching the event?
Note: Papers are due within the week following the completion of the observation.
