Suzuki Program

The Suzuki Method of Talent Education is a recognized breakthrough in the musical  training of young children.  Research has shown that processes of attention are central to every aspect of cognition and school performance.  The ‘Iolani Performing Arts Department and the Lower School have instituted a Suzuki Program at school. Ellie LeRoux, an absolute leader and authority in Suzuki philosophy and pedagogy, has moved to Honolulu to lead this program at ‘Iolani School.  To say that the school is fortunate is very much the understatement.  It is impossible to overemphasize the quality of her teaching and the rare opportunity that she and the ‘Iolani Suzuki Program offer to the students and families at ‘Iolani.

Ellie LeRoux has been teaching violin for the past 34 years, in schools, in a private studio, and as a guest clinician at workshops throughout the United States.  Ellie is a registered Suzuki Association of the Americas teacher trainer, training teachers nationally to promote the Suzuki standards of education.  In raising her own four children with music as a part of their daily lives, the intrinsic benefits of this training became evident.  Musical study helps organizational, memory, and motor skills, self-esteem, concentration, and confidence, plus so much more!  Ellie has studied with many master teachers including Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.

The ‘Iolani Suzuki Program has limited enrollment spaces for students in ALL grades. The K-3 classes meet outside of school time.  Parents are required to accompany students to the lessons (contact Ellie for tuition information).  There is a special in-school class limited to ten fourth graders for which there is no tuition fee, and parents are not required to attend lessons. Private lessons are available for Upper School students during and after school.
